Last night, I took a bold step to network and promote Levar Hage Photography at the lively 5th Street Live event in Uptown Charlotte. Arriving around 8:30 PM, I was immediately struck by the diverse crowd enjoying the vibrant atmosphere. Friends and coworkers mingled effortlessly, and initially, I felt a bit out of place, unsure of how to approach strangers in this setting.
I spent some time observing from a table, gathering my thoughts and working up the courage to introduce myself. As I was about to head back to my car, I decided to push through my nerves. I spotted two friendly-looking guys and approached them with a smile, offering to take their photo for free. I explained they could download the image from my website and encouraged them to check out my work. If they liked what they saw, I asked them to consider me for future photo services and to spread the word.
That first interaction boosted my confidence, and soon I was mingling with ease. Approaching strangers no longer felt intimidating. As a bigger guy, I'm often conscious of how I might be perceived, but I didn't let that hold me back. My goal was clear: to promote my photography business and make meaningful connections.
Throughout the evening, I met great people from different walks of life and from all over the country. The southern hospitality really stood out—everyone was so friendly. One young lady in the elevator area liked the first picture I took so much that she asked for a mini photoshoot right there! I also connected with two other photographers, one of whom shoots with the same Nikon AE-1 film camera that I have and want to learn more about. I'm definitely looking forward to my lessons with that.
I also loved the night because I got a chance to test my new Nikon Z6III in a low-light outdoor setting using only natural light. It performed fantastically, and I'm excited to see what more I can achieve with this camera.
